The City of Mosaics
Madaba is known worldwide for its Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, most famously the sixth-century Madaba Map — the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of the Holy Land, set in the floor of St. George's Church.
Why Visit
Beyond the map itself, Madaba's churches and the Madaba Archaeological Park hold some of the finest mosaic work anywhere in the region, and the town makes an easy, worthwhile stop between Amman and the Dead Sea or Mount Nebo.
